The sovereign Republic of Uzbekistan was founded on 31 August, 1991. The country is
situated in the central and north-western part of Asia. Uzbekistan consists of 12 regions and the Republic of Karakalpakstan. The state language is Uzbek, and Karakalpak in Karakalpakstan. The state currency is soum. The Constitution of Uzbekistan was adopted on December 8, 1992. According to the constitution, the President is the head of State, elected generally and directly by secret ballot. His term of office is seven years, with a right to re-election. The President is also the head of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis.
The supreme legislative body is the Oliy Majlis. The Oliy Majlis consists of two chambers – the legislative Chamber (the lower Chamber) and the Senate (the Upper Chamber).
The term of powers of the Legislative chamber and the Senate of the Oliy Majlis is five years.
The legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis consists of one hundred and twenty deputies elected by territorial constituencies on a multiparty basis.
The Senate of the Oliy Majlis is the chamber of territorial representation and consists of members of the Senate (senators).
Members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis are elected in equal quantity – in six persons – from the Republic of Karakalpakstan, regions and the city of Tashkent by secret ballot.
Sixteen members of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis are appointed by the President from the most authoritative citizens with large practical experience and special merits in the sphere of science, art, literature, manufacture and other spheres of state and public activity.
