OCEAN GROVE — Victor Burke,
president of the Ocean G r o v e
Historical Society, has announced
plans for the third annual Christ
mas Eve candle-lighting of Ocean
Grove, streets.
Mr. Burke, two years ago, pick
ed up the practice from o t h e r
American towns, and got suffici
ent response to try again.' L a s t
year’s response was much great
er, particularly in t h e neighbor
hoods of St. Paul’s Church, and
Main Avenue and Ocean Pathway.
Burke believes the practice w i l l
spread through the entire Grove
in the course of time and become
an annual fixture as it is in places
like Williamsburg. .
Last year tho time of lighting,
set for 10:30 P.M. proved too
late. This year it is suggested that
candles be lighted just after the
conclusion of Santa’s visit to Fire
men's Park.
The way is lighted for h o m e
visits & to Christmas Eve Church
by setting candles at intervals a-
long curbs or garden pathways at
individual homes.
The candles, set 10 or 12 feet
apart are prepared thus: A No.
16 grocery bag is weighted w i t h
two or three cupfuls of sand. The
rim of the bag is turned down a-,
bout two inches to make a collar.
The candle is set in the s^nd as
a holder. Lighted, the candle wilf
burn shaded from wind and cast
ing a glow through the paper sack. ,
If the candles bum down
they
will sputter out in the sand.
Speaking oi the raffle, the five
big prizes'were won by: 1983 Pon
