Exploring the Meaning of Critical Reading

Ferdous Z. & Alam M. (2022). Exploring the Meaning of Critical Reading. Language in India ISSN 1930-2940 22:7 www.languageinindia.com
This article gives information about critical reading. By definition, critical reading is paying closer than usual attention to the text and raising one's awareness; it is, in other words, the opposite of automaticity. (Catherine, 2003). The article defines critical and non-critical reading, strategies, standards, and purposes. I discovered the distinction between non-critical and critical readers by observing that the former does not read the text thoroughly, whereas critical readers are not satisfied with understanding the meaning but seek to analyze every detail. Moreover, connections between critical thinking and reading attracted me as a new source. The authors mentioned reading a text critically step by step, which is very helpful for an AEP teacher. Reading is a part of English, and as an English teacher, I will use these strategies for teaching my students in the future. In the end, a common argument is given about accepting critical reading as general reading. The argument strengthened the informativity of the article with critical ideas. This article helps recognize facts from views, identifying points of view, and analyzing and assessing arguments. The importance of reading comprehension and critical thinking to students' academic progress may be highlighted and taught.

The use of critical reading in understanding scientific texts on academic performance and problem-solving skills

Koray, Z., & Çetinkılıç, S. (2020, December 6). The Use of Critical Reading in Understanding Scientific Texts on Academic Performance and Problem-solving Skills. Science Education International, 31(4), 400–409. https://doi.org/10.33828/sei.v31.i4.9
This study sought to determine how critical reading strategies in science classes affected students' academic performance, level of science performance, and problem-solving abilities.
One of the main points of this article is that critical thinking has a great position in the field of science. Halpern, 1998 said that “To provide an education in which students learn how to think and produce effective solutions to problems, it is necessary to consider critical thinking as a skill and to adopt an interdisciplinary approach. In addition, one of the topics given significant emphasis in many areas of reform in education and areas requiring reform is high-level thinking skills”. However, critical thinking can not develop without critical reading and some other aspects. Reading, a fundamental language ability, plays a crucial role in a person's intellectual life since perception, sense-making, information acquisition, and the application of knowledge in communication all heavily rely on reading efficacy. I found out from this article that critical thinking is not enough to solve problems in academic or science fields. The most interesting thing is that I learnt the termin “ideal reading”. Surely, I will use this terminology in the future during my teaching lessons as an EAP teacher.
The effect of critical reading skill on academic success in social studies
Ozansoy, A. U. (2021, April 16). The Effect of Critical Reading Skill on Academic Success in Social Studies. Eurasian Journal of Educational Research, 21(93). https://doi.org/10.14689/ejer.2021.93.15

The article describes the importance of critical reading that is used for analyzing textual and visual content using objective standards, identifying facts from opinions, asking questions, making logical decisions, and performing comparisons and assessments. According to DeVoogd (2008:21), the purpose of critical literacy is to uphold the concept of justice and encourage independent thought to provide different viewpoints. This article helps recognize facts from views, identifying points of view, and analyzing and assessing arguments. I gained a huge amount of beneficial knowledge from this article. Especially, there is a lot of information about how to evaluate critical reading which is very helpful for students who aim to succeed in the Academic field. All the sources are trusty, valuable, and interesting. The searches are given with reliable facts that can be used by teachers in teaching students in the future.

The impact of critical reading strategies on reading comprehension.
McAlpine, JoLynn E., "The Impact Of Critical Reading Strategies On Reading Comprehension Among Middle School Students" (2019). School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Projects. 316.
https://digitalcommons.hamline.edu/hse_cp/316
According to the article, students' usage of critical reading skills and their reading comprehension are positively correlated. This capstone project was developed as a tool for teachers to enhance the amount of critical reading techniques utilized in the classroom, which would ultimately improve students' reading comprehension.
I have read some articles about critical reading and I found out that critical reading and critical thinking have a tough relationship with each other. Contrary to other articles, this article provided me with a totally different source of information. For example: I did not know the impact of critical reading to mathematics. Early reading comprehension has been linked to a better grasp of mathematics and the use of math concepts (Grimm, 2008, p. 410).
Critical reading: Student’s problems, strategies and reflections
Rohmah, Galuh Nur. “CRITICAL READING: STUDENTS’ PROBLEMS, STRATEGIES, AND REFLECTIONS.” J-ELLiT (Journal of English Language, Literature, and Teaching), vol. 2, no. 1, State University of Malang (UM), June 2018, p. 20. Crossref, https://doi.org/10.17977/um046v2i1p20-24
The article highlights the problems that students faced with critical reading as L2 learners. The article’s aim is to demonstrate students' issues, tactics, and thinking on critical reading. For solving problems with critical reading in the EFL context, some searches have been kept. And according to Edge (2011) readers are divided into two groups: critical and non-critical readers. Non-critical readers concentrate on linear actions to recognize a text on a textual level. While intense reading of material during critical reading is considered an analytical activity. Reading critically helps to increase interpretation and evaluation. I also will teach my future students to read texts critically which helps them develop logical thinking. Wang & Gierl (2011, p.169) said that “critical reading is the reading skills that involve a higher level of thinking in which the reader uses a questioning attitude, logical analysis, and inference to judge the worth of what is read”
