BIOTECHNOLOGY

The department of Biotechnology was founded under the headship of Prof. (Dr.) V.J. Philip in the year 1994 with

an intention to develop basic infrastructure, manpower and promote research in frontier areas of Biotechnology.  The

department funded and sponsored by DBT, NewDelhi (Ministry of Science and Technology, Govt. of India) started the All

India National Stream M.Sc. Program in 1995.  The student selection and allotment is through a National Level Common

Entrance Test conducted by Jawarharlal Nehru University, N.Delhi.  All students receive monthly studendship of Rs. 3000/

- from DBT – Govt. of India.

Prof. V.J. Philip retired in 1997.  Prior to his retirement, one Reader ( Dr. M.V. Joseph) and two Lecturers ( Sri

C.Gopinathan and Dr. P.R. Manish Kumar) were appointed in 1996 followed by the appointment of Dr.K.K.Elyas in 2009 as

Professor and that of Dr. Smitha Bava as Assistant Professor in 2010.

BOTANY

The Department of Post-Graduate Studies and Research in Botany, University of  Calicut,  Kerala, was established

on 23rd July 1968. The objective of the Department is to achieve excellence in research and teaching by promoting higher

education and improving human resources of the educationally and economically backward Malabar region of the

country.  The Department with a total of 16 faculty positions is a center of Post-graduate teaching and  research and

offers M.Sc. (Applied Plant Science),  M.Phil. (Botany) and Ph.D. (Botany, Biotechnology and Environmental Science)

programmes.

This is the only university centre for studies in Angiosperm Taxonomy, Fungal Systematics and Plant Diversity in

South India. The biggest University Botanical Garden (CUBG) in India with5 Green Houses, Ginger House, Medicinal Plant

Collection, Conservatory of RET Plants and Collection of  Ferns  is attached to this department. The largest University

Herbarium (CALI) with 40,000 Specimens is also attached to this department. This is the headquarters of the Indian

Association for Angiosperm Taxonomy (IAAT) - publishes the journal Rheedea. It has produced about 150 Ph.D’s, 1000

research publications, 30 research level books.
