Read the passage and answer questions 23-30.
1. About a thousand years ago, there were people known
as the Vikings. They were powerful and the people in
Europe were afraid of them. The Vikings were the people of
Scandinavia, which now includes Denmark, Norway, and
Sweden.
2. The Vikings were farmers and fishermen. The places
where they lived were not easy to live in and to grow crops.
Britain and Europe had plenty of good farmland, so the
Vikings tried to get some of that land for themselves. Many
of them left their homes in search of treasure and adventure.
By the year 700, they began attacks upon towns of Europe
and stole the wealth of those towns. The Vikings attacked
suddenly. They were cruel to the people of the towns that
they attacked and often destroyed the towns by burning
down the buildings. In some parts of Europe, the people
fought against them. Sometimes they paid the Vikings and
persuaded them not to attack.
3. Gradually, the Vikings stopped attacking the towns of
Europe, and began trading with their neighbours. Today, the
Scandinavian countries are known as very peace-loving
nations.
