ACTIVITY: Simple Pre-Assessment Activity
What is the Pre-assessment of 
Lesson Topic activity? 
•
A quick assessment method (10-15 minutes) teachers use, 
before topic lesson, to learn what their students already know 
about the topic. 
Why use the Pre-assessment 
of Lesson Topic activity in 
your classroom? 
•
Teachers learn what their students already know about the 
lesson topic. 
•
Students think about what they know about the topic in 
advance of lesson (activates prior knowledge of topic). 
•
Students connect their prior knowledge with new knowledge 
given in lesson (scaffolding) 
•
Students enjoy moving from their desks to the chalkboard, 
writing on the chalkboard, and sharing what they already 
“know” about the topic.
•
Students develop their own lesson vocabulary list
