SELECTION OF THE WATER SHUT-OFF OPERATION FOR A 
WELL IN BAHAR GAS FIELD

Excess water production is known to be a problem of paramount impor-
tance while producing hydrocarbons in terms of economical, environmental 
and technical factors, ultimately reducing the net monetary gain from the 
given well. The problem becomes more serious in case of the multilayered 
reservoirs due to the fact that not all the intervals may require a treatment at 
the given time.
In general, there is a wide range of water shut-off applications in the 
industry which have been given below: 
In this research, a case study has been conducted in order to select the 
best water shut-off treatment for a given well in the Bahar gas field. 
Well Information

The well is a gas producing well drilled and completed during Soviets in 
the Bahar gas field (in 1985). During that time, the well was closed because 
of the higher economic limit. However, currently it is economical for the 
company (Bahar Energy and Operating Company) to produce from the once 
abandoned intervals. The main issue is that, there are multiple open zones 
in the given well, and some of them produce water inhibiting gas production 
from other zones.
The figure 1 illustrates the problematic zone in the well. It has been 
divided into 2 zones which are zone 1 and zone 2. There are 2 cases that 
challenge the water shut-off treatment. First of all, the water producing zone 
(zone 1) to be treated is located above the gas producing zone. Apart from
