Lidocaine has many useful properties besides its anti-arrhythmic abilities. It can scavenge free radicals and prevent re-perfusion injury seen with restoration of blood flow to compromised tissue. It may help to prevent ilieus following gut surgery.
It is useful as part of an analgesia protocol for severe/intractable pain. It has a synergistic effect with other analgesics providing a better pain control. It also provides a MAC sparing effect (minimum alveolar concentration) on inhalant anaesthetics, allowing the reduction of isoflurane/sevoflurane used and minimising their negative effects.
