Introduction to Strategic Studies
Abstract
The present book
is devoted to Strategic Studies – a
sub-discipline within the framework of international relations
that focuses on problems of war, military power and
strategy in their relations with political goals. The origin
of this sub-discipline associated with the name of Bernard
Brodie, who in his article “Strategy as a Science”
published in the World Politics journal in 1949 laid the
foundation for categorical and methodological apparatus of
this academic field.
As a specific area of international relations Strategic
Studies is developing actively, especially, in the West.
Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, Missouri State, National Defense
universities in the United States, universities of
Aberdeen, Exeter, Leeds in the United Kingdom, and
Australian National University, the Royal Military College
in Canada and many others on a regular basis prepare
specialists in this field.
The book, surely, is not intended to cover the entire area
of Strategic Studies. We expected to prepare a kind of intro-
ductory work that reflects the assessment of the most important
aspects of the field.
The structure of the book, accordingly, includes: the
subject of Strategic Studies, the factors and specifics of its de-
velopment; war problems in international relations from point
of view of its major theories – classical realism, neorealism,
classical liberalism, neoliberalism, social constructivism, offen-
se-defense theory; national military security, its major aspects
and categories; military power in contemporary world, its
applicability in the current conditions, and the peculiarities of
the present global balance of military powers; basics of mi-
