Children's rights

Kafkaz NGO

About 70 drawings made by third and fourth graders were displayed recently in an exhibition dedicated to the

anniversary of the UN Convention on Children's Rights.  The exhibition took place in the art gallery of the Baku

Oxford School and in School Number 86 in the Khatai Region.

The NGO Kafkaz and the teaching staff from the Baku Oxford School organized this event.  Through the work of this

NGO, psychologists analyzed the drawings.  They came to the unfortunate conclusion that not all of the children

experience favorable living conditions at home.  Far too often, violence at home is just a fact of life for these children.

We, the representatives of Kafkaz, tried to talk with those parents who regularly beat their children and do not realize

that it is a problem.  It became clear that for many parents, this was their way of releasing negative emotions. In the

future, we hope to engage these parents in psychological therapy.

This is not to say however, that all of these children have a dark childhood.  In some of the drawings, you can see

toys and a brightly shining sun.  This shows that there are favorable living conditions in these children's households.

According to psychologists, in this situation there is mutual understanding and respect between the parents and

children.  These children are not told “be silent, you are too small”, as are some of their peers.  Instead, they are

accepted as people having the right to their own opinions and desires.

A competition was held to choose the best drawing.  Winners received prizes and everyone involved received

certificates, leaflets, brochures and booklets about children's rights.  The NGO Kafkaz and the teachers from the

Baku Oxford School are planning similar events involving children from other schools in Baku.

The Children's Rights Convention is perhaps the single most important international document to be ratified by the

Milli Mejlis in Azerbaijan.  We hope that people will learn about it and follow it, and that we can play a role in helping

to raise public awareness to the rights of children as set out in the Convention.  This Convention must have the

same power across the country as all other documents adopted by the parliament.
