Eales Disease
Eales Disease (“Eales Disease”, n.d., para. 1) initially causes inflammation and a white haze around the outercoat of the veins in the retina. (Wrong: “Eales Disease”, n.d.) Initial symptoms can include sudden vision loss of vision impairment, floating spots, or inflamed retinal blood vessels. (“Eales Disease,” 2010) Eales is a noninflammatory disorder of the walls of the peripheral retinal vessels that can lead to vascular occlusion and vitreous hemorrhaging. The vitreous (“Eales Disease”, n.d., para. 1) seeping out of the eyeball can (University: “Eales Disease”, 2010) cause temporary or permanent blindness in one eye.
Treatment
Common treatments include (“Eales Disease”, n.d., para. 1) corticosteroids in the inflammation stage in order to stabilize the symptoms and reduce the inflammation. In cases of hemorrhaging, (“Eales Disease,” 2010) the choice treatment has become moderately light, full-scatter laser photocoagulation to areas of the nonperfused retina, lowering the incidence of virteous hemorrhage continuing. In cases of retinal detachment, removing the nonclearing vitreous hemorrhage and membrane dissection is necessary. Currently (Orphan: “Eales Disease,” 2010) antioxidant supplementation is being studied for treatment of Eales Disease (“Eales Disease,” 2010) as the antioxidizing enzymes are deficient in the vitreous samples of patients with Eales Disease.
Prognosis
Easles Disease (“Eales Disease,” 2010) is congenital and stable with treatment. A good visual prognosis is seen when treatment begins early. In seventy percent of patients, vision is better than 20/200, so vision can be corrected using glasses.
