When organising your answer it may
also help to 'group' some of the
information. This is particularly the
case when there is a lot of data, as in
the graph on the right.
Here there are too many age groups for
each to be described independently,
so it helps to group some of them.
How to approach the task
Consider what the graph shows and think about the vocabulary and tenses
you will use in describing it.
Select two significant features of the graph (overall) to write about.
Note some points about the earning power of female graduates by grouping
the ages 25-59.
Note some points about the male graduates by grouping the ages as you feel
is appropriate.
Consider the comparisons you will make.
Think about a final point.
Now write a paragraph describing the information shown in the graph.

Describing a process
In Writing Task
1
you may occasionally be asked to describe a process or
other pictorial
information
such as
a cycle
or map. In order to produce a report describing a process you should take a similar
approach to
the one you used
in describing data.
You
should examine the information carefully -
which will be in pictorial form
-
and make sure you understand it. Look specifically
at
the beginning
and
the end of
the process. Then, following the same principles as outlined in previous units,
you
should provide
an
opening sentence that summarises the overall function of the process.
1 Discuss what the following diagram is about. Then write a sentence which
summarises the process.

• Describe the process verbally to each other. See if you agree on the facts. Then
