Abstract:
The article is devoted to the issue of the history of ancient defense
structures, especially defense walls, in Central Asia, including the region between
two rivers. Long defensive walls in Central Asia can be divided into three categories
according to their function. The first type of walls was not only a means of defining
the boundaries of large estates and defending agricultural oases from the attacks
of settlers. They blocked the path of cavalry warriors and protected the borders of
states from all neighbors and external enemies. The second type of walls seems to
have been intended to protect only certain areas of the state, as well as to control the
passage through them and to conduct customs inspections of passing trade caravans.
The third type of walls probably served to protect a specific area or suburbs. The
long walls across the steppe blocked the path of cavalry warriors and prevented sand
from entering.
