Interior - American Recovery and Reinvestment Act investments

  • $1.25 million for the Arthur R. Marshall Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge to combat exotic invasive plants.

  • $12.5 million to restore habitat at Everglades National Park by reconstructing the Cape Sable Canals Plugs/dams.

  • Partnership with SFWMD.

  • By 2017, Old World Climbing Fern, Melaleuca, Brazilian Pepper, and Australian Pine must be in 100% maintenance control.

  • Between 2002 and 2008, $18 million invested.

  • 217,000 acres initially treated and retreated.

Special Pilot Projects

  • Tamiami Trail Swales:

    • 4 alternatives ranging from No Action to modeling and actual construction.
    • Recommended plan for Hydrologic modeling followed by construction of 2 pilot swales along Tamiami Trail.
    • Monitoring ongoing and to be completed by Dec 09 with decision to be made on whether to proceed with construction.
    • Construction of pilot could begin in Spring 2010 with additional monitoring to follow through 2012.




Special Pilot Project

  • Seepage Cutoff Wall :

    • 2 Ongoing Actions:
    • Both should start construction within next year.
    • Both consist of cutoff to varying depths.
    • Both will be monitored to determine effectiveness of reducing seepage out of Everglades.




2009 Omnibus Appropriations Act directed NPS study to:

  • Restore Natural Water Flow to ENP

  • Restore Ecological Connectivity

  • Restore Habitat Within ENP

  • Everglades National Park leading effort with technical assistance from Corps of Engineers.

  • Analysis looking at options ranging from no action to 6 plus miles of additional bridging



Tamiami Trail Study Milestones

  • Currently completing NEPA Scoping.

  • Final Range of Alternatives—July 2009.

  • Publish Draft EIS in December 2009.

  • Complete Feasibility Report—March 2010.

  • Complete Final EIS—Sept. 2010.
