counter culture media n. a social movement whose belief systems and norms are defined in opposition to those of mainstream society. The term is attributed to the US historian Theodore Roszak (1933-2011) author of The Making of a Counter Culture (1969) and is most often used in relation to the protest movements of the 1960s (for instance, against the Vietnam War) which were seen as much more than merely political but rooted in a generational shift in ideas, beliefs and values, reflecting a counter culture. mmo

creative and cultural industries media n. are those associated with individual (or group) creativity where ideas, and the texts, artifacts, programs and techniques in which they are embodied, are developed and exchanged for financial gain. Core examples of creative industries are broadcasting, publishing, film production, drama and music. However, the term is broad enough to include other areas such as advertising, fashion, architecture, as well as research and design. The term has gained particular currency in policy circles as a response to the decline of older, ‘rust-belt’ industries, the outsourcing of many industrial processes to the emerging economies of China, Brazil and India, and the desire by the mature and stagnating economies of the West to try and capitalize on their remaining advantages in the areas of intellectual property rights, including those knowledge-generation, transfer, and innovation. mmo

creativity media n. the capacity to produce (or create) works which are original, novel and innovative. Associated, at the least since the Romantic period, with the composition of poetry, music, painting and sculpture (and other works of the imagination), it is increasingly used to underpin and valorize developments in the creative and cultural industries such as advertising and fashion. mmo
