intersubjectivity media n. a way of defining experience or knowledge in such a way that it transcends the polarities of subjectivity and objectivity. If the claim to truth can rest only upon objective knowledge, it denies the role of the knowing subject. If all knowledge is subjective, on the other hand, then there is no way of validating it. The notion of intersubjectivity underpins claims that some things can be known to be true because they are shared knowledge between knowing subjects. Intersubjectivity is a basic property of dialogue, which is only possible if participants share to some degree a fundamental reciprocity of perspectives. mmo ****

intertextuality media n. the interrelationships between a text and other texts. Familiar examples of intertextuality would be parody, irony, allusion, reported speech and quotation, though these by no means exhaust the full scope of the term, which has its origins in the work of the Bulgarian semiotician and post-structuralist thinker, Julia Kristeva (b. 1941). She uses it to emphasize the way in which no text is a bounded object, meaningful in and for itself, but exists in a creative interplay with a myriad of other texts from the culture. In her view, the meaning of a text lies not ‘inside’ it but in tension between, or in the space occupied between itself and other texts. The term has been widely applied in literary criticism, linguistics, and media and cultural studies though often simply to assert influence or connection between one text and another without clear principles of application. mmo

interview media n. an institutionalized speech genre defined by the pre-allocation of the roles of questioner and answerer: the interviewer asks the questions and the interviewee answers them. The interview is widely used in a variety of institutional settings ranging from the forensic to the medical. In addition, it is commonly used when selecting candidates for a job and has become highly salient in both entertainment and current affairs television. spclst. interviewer. mmo
