manufacture of consent media n. phrase used in the book Public Opinion (1922) by the American writer and public intellectual Walter Lippman (1889-1974) to refer to the necessary and important processes of informing the public in a modern democracy. The phrase was subsequently adapted by the American scholars, Noam Chomsky (b.1928) Edward S Herman (b.1925) for the title of their book, Manufacturing Consent, (1988), on which they posit a propaganda model to explain the output of the North American news media as serving mainly corporate interests and as therefore systematically biased. market research media n. research on customers and markets, used to gain advantage over competitors. It involves systematically gathering information about factors such as competition, market size, and market need and using analytical and statistical methodologies to interpret this information. SJ

marketing media n. the processes involved in communicating and spreading the value of a service or product to customers and target markets. Successful marketing involves understanding consumer buying behaviour, creating connections with customers, the development of strong brand identities, and sustaining long-term growth for a product or service. mass audience media n. a large audience to which a work of mediated communication is addressed. The concept of a mass audience has been somewhat undermined by the development of new media which encourage a much more differentiated sense of audiences and publics mmo
