rumor (uk rumour) media n. an uncorroborated, usually anonymous, claim which circulates freely between people about a person, event, or state of affairs. The most potent rumors relate to issues of public concern and add a satisfying twist to an existing narrative. While gossip traditionally has provided an apt relay or diffusion mechanism for the circulation of rumor, the internet has vastly increased the potential of rumor for strategic effect, particularly in the area of political communication. mmo
