Although the incidence of sigmoid volvulus appears stable, increas-
ing numbers of cecal volvulus were observed. Sigmoid and cecal
volvulus affect different populations and when present synchronously
lead to high mortality rates. Volvulus of the transverse colon is rare
and associated with high mortality rates. Resection is the most com-
monly performed procedure for colonic volvulus in the acute setting.
The mortality rate of surgical cases is related to patients’ age and
comorbidities and is mostly driven by bowel viability and the pres-
ence of coagulopathy. This suggests that time is of the essence in the
management of this condition.
