infection can be a strong factor in heavily populated livestock areas.
How Infectious Diseases Are Spread
Manifestations of Disease
Detectable signs of disease are known as
symptoms.
Visible changes
in the
size, color, shape
or
structure
of an
organ
are known
as
lesions.
Loss of body weight
,
decreased production, reduced feed
consumption, droopiness
and
lameness
are
some symptoms. An
enlarged
liver, tumor
on the
intestine
, or an
abscess
in a lung are examples of lesions.
Many symptoms are general; they usually are seen in any diseased
individual. Examples are
droopiness, loss of appetite, labored breathing,
nasal discharge and diarrhea.

Common infectious diseases in livestock production
We will cover 4 livestock diseases in 3 species caused by different
pathogens. As you can imagine there are a very large number of
diseases and we will not be able to cover everything, but hopefully
this book will provide a good overview and will give you an idea about
the challenges farmers face in keeping their animals healthy.
The diseases we will cover are:
•
Footrot in sheep
•
Mastitis in dairy cattle
•
Bovine viral diarrhea
•
Coccidiosis in chickens
