Anaerobic Cellular Respiration
Anaerobic respiration is used by some prokaryotes, including a few types of bacteria and Archaea. For
instance, the Archaea known as methanogens convert carbon dioxide to methane to oxidize NADH. These
microbes are present in soil and ruminant digestive tracts, such as those of cows and sheep. Similarly, sulfate-
reducing bacteria and Archaea, most of which are anaerobic, reduce sulfate to hydrogen sulfide to regenerate
NAD
+
from NADH
