intimate connection between the geographic site at the narrative center
and the authority it invokes or promotes. Yet rather than explicitly posi-
tion itself, the account simply begins with the biography of Emperor
Jinmu, before advancing in chronological order through 105 imperial
reigns spread across two scrolls of approximately equal length. The biog-
raphies typically open with the emperor’s date of accession to the throne
and parentage. Alternative names are also often provided, and for the early
emperors before the establishment of a stable capital in Nara, palace names
and locations are noted. (The flip side of this listing of palaces is the su-
perfluity of naming the current capital, implied to be stable by not being
listed.)
Other significant elements from the reign—the logic of which is not

cases by selected contemporary events from China and India. The pen-
insular kingdoms occupy an ambiguous status and are often interwoven
with the “Japanese” narrative, but they are nevertheless present. The first
eighty reigns are covered in the first scroll, most often in fairly brief terms.

last twenty-five reigns are covered in the second scroll, which goes into
great detail about battles of the Genpei War, the Mongol invasions, the
