Essay types
As mentioned before, there are various types of essays for both general and academic modules; however, note that
the essay type does not affect the essay organization. The most common types of essays in the IELTS test are as
follows:
1.
Argument essays
:
show agreement or disagreement with the topic and provide reasons for these
opinions.
2.
Discussion essays
:
discuss both sides of the given situation and the writer’s view.
3.
Causes-effects essays
:
examine the reasons and results of a situation.
4.
Causes-solutions essays
:
outline the reasons for a situation, and suggest some solutions to solve the
mentioned problem.
5.
Advantages-disadvantages essays
:
discuss the positive and negative aspects of something or a
situation.
6.
Double-question essays
:
address two different questions that may or may not be relevant.
Argument Essays
Argumentative topics are quite common in IELTS writing task 2. In this type of essay, candidates are usually given
a statement with which they must agree or disagree. There are two types of argumentative topics that are slightly
different. However, they are quite similar in structure, brainstorming ideas, and organization.
