Translators and interpreters have played an important role in evolution of cultures. A big amount of people confuse
translation with interpretation but Interpretation is more difficult than translation. The main difference
is that translation is
written, while interpretation is verbal. An interpreter is a person, who understands the text in a Source language and
transmits it in a target language. Simultaneous translation is a difficult one that is why we encounter with some problems.
Common misconception is that anyone who can speak a second language will make a good interpreter or translator. In the
translation community, it is generally accepted that the best translations are produced by persons who are translating into
their own native languages, as it is rare for someone who has learned a second language to have total fluency in that
language. A good translator understands the source language well, has specific experience in the subject matter of the text,
and is a good speaker in the target language. Moreover, he is not only bilingual but bicultural. There are two types of
simultaneous interpretation. The first of these is interpreting by listening: in this case the interpreter speaks after the speaker
as soon as he/she has an adequate amount of information to start. The second type involves working with prepared
information.
The main problem in Simultaneous translation is fast speech. But if the speed is beyond a certain limit, interpreter can’t
transmit the full meaning of message, even if she/he is an expert in his work. Fast speakers place interpreters, listeners and
non-native listeners at disadvantage. It is recognized that a rate between 100-120 words per minute is optimal for English
speeches but it may change for different speech types. Fast speech may lead to several problems like: mistranslation (the
information lost in mistranslation). And fast delivery makes comprehension difficult even when the audience is listening to
a native language. English is a non-native language to many and also, when the interpreter speaks too fast, participants lose
information and can’t catch the meaning of message (context). To have a good result in translation the speaker must speak
at an appropriate speed. It is clear that the speech rate has a direct correlation with interpretation quality. Accuracy is
reduced as the speech gets faster.
Second big problem is memorizing. Of course it is impossible to memorize all the words from message, because human
brain can’t bear such a load. As well as interpreter’s memory doesn’t store the words of the sentence delivered by the
speakers but only the meaning those words convey. Memory is such an important language and oral communication
problem in Simultaneous interpreting. In addition to this Due to the massive psychological strain, simultaneous interpreters
normally work in pairs, alternating every 20 to 30 minutes. This has a direct effect on the cost of services. Unfortunately, an
individual simultaneous interpreter cannot work solidly over long periods. And it is fact that in Russian market you will find
out that simultaneous interpreting is the most expensive service.
According to the data obtained from the analysis it can be concluded that the main language and oral communication
difficulties are: fast speech and memorizing. In my opinion interpreter should be familiar with the topic. It makes interpreter
work easier.
