Tip:
Guessing is an important strategy. If there are words that you don’t know, don’t
stop and don’t panic. Keep moving forward. Look at the questions after the passage. If
there are questions that relate to the words that you don’t understand, look at the
nearby words and sentences and then guess the meaning of the unknown words.

Exercise 24: Read the paragraph about obesity and answer the questions below.
Obesity results from an imbalance of the body’s food intake, physical activity
and resting metabolism. A variety of both psychological and physiological factors
play a role. Certain endocrine gland disorders, such as hypothyroidism or
tumours of the adrenal gland, pancreas or pituitary gland, may cause obesity.
Recent research has found that a reduction of the body’s resting metabolic rate
also has a significant effect on the development of obesity. However, most
obesity results from using food excessively as an inappropriate coping
mechanism to deal with emotional stress.

Exercise 25: Read the following paragraph about the ozone layer and answer the
questions.
The ozone layer is a layer of the upper atmosphere about 20 to 25 km above the
earth’s surface. It is so named because the unstable form of oxygen called ozone
is concentrated in this layer. The ozone layer strongly absorbs ultraviolet
radiation from the sun. if this radiation reached the earth’s surface at
unprotected levels, it would be deleterious to all forms of life. For example, it
would raise the incidence of human skin cancers and cataracts, as well as
reducing food production in general.
