Conclusion Summarizing my course paper the theme of which is devoted the stylistic devices used in the poem “Piers Plowman”, I came to the conclusion that different phonetic, lexical and syntactic stylistic devices play an integral role in depicting the main themes of the poem and describing the characters of the it. For writing this course paper I referred to the different scientific research works done by various scholars as Middleton, Gradon and R. Greentree. These scholars expressed towards the form and writing style of the poem, and the use of stylistic devices for the character description.
The first chapter of my course paper deals with the stylistic expressive means and stylistic devices, their differences, use and classification.
Expressive means are concrete facts of the language, while syntactic device is a deliberate literary use of some facts of the language, including expressive means in which the most essential features are brought to the foreground. Stylistic devices are classified into: Lexical SDs (tropes); Syntactic SDs (figures of speech); Lexico-syntactic SDs; Graphic EMs; Phonetic EMs.
In the second chapter of my course paper I gave the thorough information about the usage of stylistic devices in “Piers Plowman. William Langland applied different phonetic and lexical stylistic devices in his poem as alliteration, assonance allegory, metaphors, similes and allusions.
For instance, there are numerous religious, literary, historical allusions in the poem: Saint Paul, Satan, Christ, Peter, The devil, Caesar, Adam, Eve, Cain, Judas, Saint Luke, Lucifer, God, Satan, Beelzebub, Solomon, Mary, King David, Matthew.
The third chapter of my course paper is about the syntactic stylistic devices used in the poem and its form and writing style.
Langland's creative literary style and complex structure contribute significantly to the poem's rich tapestry of themes and allegorical elements. A deep understanding of both the style and structure of Piers Plowman provides readers with a unique perspective, enabling a more comprehensive appreciation of the poem's themes and impact.
