OTHER CHARACTERS

Sam Farrow - Charles's Hackney servant .Throughout the novel, Sam 

becomes the narrator's model for the working class peoples of 

Victorian Britain

•

Dr Grogan – an Irish doctor in the town of Lyme Regis who both 

advises the various upper-class families in the town, and becomes 

an adviser to Charles. His education and interest in Darwin and 

other education make him a good companion for Charles.

•

Mr Freeman – the father of Ernestina, he earned his wealth as an 

owner of a drapery and clothes sales chain of stores. He "represents 

the rising entrepreneurial class in England" which stands in stark 

contrast to the old money which Smithson comes from.

Mrs Tranter – a prominent member of Lyme Regis society who is 

friends with Grogan and, as her maternal aunt, hosts Ernestina during 

her stay.

•

Mrs Poulteney – a wealthy widow and, at the beginning of the novel,  the 

employer of Sarah Woodruff.  Hypocritical,  and hypersensitive,  her 

character fulfills  the archetype of high-society villainess.

•

Mary – stereotypical lower-class servant to Mrs Tranter and future wife 

to Sam Farrow.

•

Montague - Charles Smithson's family lawyer of a firm which has been 

around since the eighteenth century. 2–3 years older than Charles, he 

helps his client in search of Sarah towards the end of the novel.

PLOT SUMMARY

Sarah is a French lieutenant`s woman who is living in Dorset. She

had been deluded by French Lieutenant(Varguennes) and had

intercourse with him being unaware of his marriage. But when

Varguennes leaves her and returns to France, the society blame

Sarah because of her temporary relationship with him. Sarah often

goes to the seaside to think over what shehas encountered so far.

One day Charles Smithson and Ernestina see Sarah there and

Ernestina begins to talk about what she knows about Sarah and this

makes Charles interested about Sarah. As he influences the story

about Sara he decides to meet her. When they meet Sarah talks

about what has happened to her and want Charles to b supportive

to her because of that bad experience.

Charles persuades her to leave the town for Exter because

she has very little chance to be happy in this town. As he

sends Sarah to another place to protect her from the attack of

the society, he considers he`ll never see Sarah again. However

during one of his journeys he does not prevent himself going

to see her again. They have sex and Charles notices Sarah is

still untouched in contrast to the stand point of society about

her.

Charles also become aware of that her uncle has got married

to too young lady and if she gave birth to a male child all the

inheritance would pass to that child rather than Charles.

Charles and Ernestina have an unhappy marriage and

it is unknown that what has happened to Sarah.

Charles confesses that he has met Sarah by accident

but does not mention details and the couple forget

about this issue.
