The ancient Greeks built open-air
theatres, usually on a hillside, with semi-circular rows of
seats overlooking a circular space called the orchestra. The restored theatre at Epidaurus, dating
from about 350 B.C., is a good example of a Classical Greek theatre. The
Romans altered this
plan by introducing a raised platform for the performers. The first theatre in London
was erected in Shoreditch by Richard Burbage, a colleague of Shakespeare; a little later, in
about 1590, he built the more famous Globe theatre across the River Thames at Southwark.
However, the first theatre in the modern sense
was built at Parma, Italy in 1618, with the
familiar plan of an auditorium with a raised stage and a curtain.
