Do you think that the advantages outweigh the disadvantages? The past four years have seen groundbreaking medical improvements (tissue cloning and STEM cell regeneration), which have allowed people to enjoy longer lives. Though at first glance this might be seen as a favorable change, I believe longer life expectancy is, for the most part, disadvantageous.
From an economic standpoint, increased life expectancy allows governments to make pension age reforms. That is, pension age can be reset from 65 to 75 or higher. Despite the concerns over physical well-being of employees, employers gain from having experienced and wise staff. This, as a result, leads to higher productivity. As an individual, senior citizens can enjoy more family time. As well as helping raise their grandchildren, old people can be a much-needed positive influence on the young, who often lack supervision and guidance. In this sense, not only old people foster stronger family bonds, but also help young, working parents rear their children.
The chief problem with longevity is overpopulation, which is accompanied by a set of other problems. As the global population grows, so does demand for food and space. Populous countries such as China and India might experience serious shortages in terms of food and accommodation as a result of high birth-to-death ratio. More alarmingly, the environmental damage is likely to soar seeing as countries are starting to exploit more of natural resources to meet the needs of their growing populations. Finally, old demographics often create a burden on the healthcare system given that people grow vulnerable to illnesses as they grow older.
In conclusion, while there are some upsides to longer life expectancy following recent medical advances, I would contend that problems ensuing overpopulation like a shortage of food and space, harm to the environment and setbacks in healthcare far outweigh the positives.
