The Ascending Scandent Scale is formed by an ascending series of syllables in which each stressed syllable is pronounced with a rise, while each of the unstressed syllables is pitched a little higher than the end of the preceding syllable.


Why haven’t you arrived in ˋtime?  



  1. A Level Scale is formed by a series of stressed and unstressed syllables pronounced on the same pitch level. The pitch level of the Level and Descending Stepping Scales is determined by that of the head which is the highest pitch point in them. Accordingly these scales may be: low, mid and high.

Low Descending Stepping Scale

The High Level Scale is used in highly emotional speech. The Mid Level Scale is used in less emotional speech. The Low Level Scale is used to express a perfunctory note in the utterance. It also serves to show indifference, hostility and some other unpleasant emotions.
