Introduction
It is of the utmost importance to find green solutions – use alternative/
renewable energy sources and reduce energy consumption to increase
sustainability and ensure safe future. For decades, many studies have been
carried out on energy consumption of escalators and many methods have
been proposed to reduce the amount of energy used.
In our proposed method, mechanical system is utilized to reduce energy
consumption in two escalators by creating a pulley system.
Energy consumption of escalators
According to Al-Sharif [1] [2], the total energy consumption of an
escalator can be divided into two groups: fixed losses and variable losses.
Total energy consumption of the escalator will be:
𝐸 = 𝐸 + 𝐸
where
𝐸
– fixed energy consumption,
𝐸 –
is variable energy consumption.
The sign of plus or minus depends on the escalator type (downward/upward
moving escalator).
Fixed energy consumption is influenced by the efficiency of motor and
the gear [4].
Fixed energy consumption for continuously running escalator can be
calculated by:
𝐸 = (𝐶 ∗ 𝑟 + 𝐶 )ℎ
According to Lutfi Al-Sharif, there is a strong correlation between the
energy consumed by an escalator and the number of passengers travelling
on it.
In order to calculate variable energy consumption, the formula given
below is used:
𝐸
= (𝑝
∗ 𝑔 ∗ 𝑟 ∗ 𝑚 ∗ 𝑘 )/3600000
Where
𝑝
– the number of passengers per day, r – vertical rise, g –
acceleration due to gravity, m – average mass of a passenger in kg and k
wf
– walking factor.
