The role of games in learning English

WORD GAMES
In this section the focus of attention is initially on the word rather than the sentence: spelling (as., for example, in Dash it and bang it), meanings (as in Definitions or The odd man out), words for sentence-making (as in A—A, B~B or Make a sentence), words as inferred from contexts (as in Missing words), or words as categorized according to grammatical usage (as in Variation 3 of Bingo). However, learners are required in many cases to go beyond the initial focus and to communicate in full sentences, sometimes (as in the variation of the odd man out) to pursue ideas and argue at some length.
All levels of proficiency are catered for by one or more of the games in this section.

Language: Listening to and reading numbers, or, in Variation 1, words, or, in Variation 2, whole sentences. The words and sentences can be selected to practice any area of language that you wish. Variation 3 practices identification of parts of speech.
Skills: All.
Control: Controlled.
Level: Beginners, except for Variations 2 and 3, which are suitable for intermediate learners also.
Time: 10-20 minutes.
Materials Paper and pencil for yourself and each learner.
Preparation
Decide on a group of numbers you wish to practice, totaling not more than about 25. These may be sequences (e.g. 1—25) or a selection of numbers which present listening problems (e.g. T3 and 30, ry and 90). Either write them on the board or tell the learners what they are.
Procedure: Class work.
Tell the learners to write down any four of the numbers from those you have given them. Call the numbers in random order. The learners must cross out the numbers they have written if they hear them called. The first learner to cross out all four of his/her numbers calls out 'Bingo' and reads out the four numbers to prove the claim.
It is possible to play the game selecting more than four numbers from a group larger than 25. However, this will take more time.
