Meaning: To improve your behavior; make more of an effort.
Example: Tell your king that he'll have to smarten up his act if he needs me
as an ally.

Meaning: General state of life; general situation in life.
Example: John seems happy enough with his lot in life;
He tried to accept
the bankruptcy of his company as his lot in life, but he could not.
Splinter off from something
Meaning: To separate from
the greater part of something; to separate from a
larger group.
Example: Small group splintered off from main camp.
Squeeze something out of someone
Meaning: To force someone to do or give something (mostly information).
Example: It's just a shame we couldn't squeeze
