All trees were planted in addition to the tree species planted in AF systems (see Figure S3 and Table S7 in Supplementary Material); strata: Forest Floor – Understory (FF-U), Understory (U), Low Canopy (LC), Canopy (C), Emergent (E); life cycles: S I: < two years, S II: 2 – 15 years, S III: 15 – 80 years, P: >80 years; *all additional shade tree species in SAFS were sown in a mixture of three to four different species next to each banana tree at 4 m × 4 m spacing; later on, one particular tree was selected and left to grow aiming at a maximum level of diversity; step by step the trees will be thinned out, maintaining a final density of approximately 40 adult trees per ha in the Canopy and Emergent strata, respectively.
