ENGLISH
Established in 1969, the Department of English, University of Calicut, has come to be recognized as a major
academic centre for studies in English language and literature in Kerala. Over the years the Department has evolved a
healthy research profile representing most contemporary areas of significance in literature, language, and related
fields. A noteworthy feature of our faculty research endeavours is that most of them are highly interdisciplinary in
nature and bring on board some of the most significant theoretical postulations of our times. The major areas of
research and supervision of the faculty include Postcolonial Studies, Women’s Writing, Dalit Writing, Gender Studies,
Film Studies, Cultural Studies, Performance Studies, Literary and Cultural Theory, Translation Studies, Indian Writing in
English, Drama, English Language Teaching and Linguistics. More than a hundred students have received their Ph.D.s
from the Department so far, around 20 of them in the last five years. The Department regularly hosts seminars and
conferences on different aspects of language, literature and culture, and brings out a biannual scholarly journal,
Interventions. The Department library has a rich collection of over 25,000 books and several journals, and is a major
reference centre for scholars and researchers in the area.

SCHOOL OF FOLKLORE STUDIES
The Centre for Folklore Studies is one of Statutory Departments of University of Calicut, established in the year
1999. The Department started functioning in the Vatakara Campus at Puthuppanam, 3 Kms., away from Vatakara town
towards south and very near to NH-17. During2009, the Department was shifted from Vatakara and started functioning in
the University Campus at Thenhipalam, Malappuram. It is the only Folklore Department in Kerala and within this short
span of time, the Centre could develop a digital folklore archive and a good library. The Centre entered into Memorandum
of Understanding with Folklore Fellows of Malabar (Trust) and Centre for Development of Image Technology (C-DIT),
Government of Kerala and therefore students are getting excellent training in Folk Medicine and Visual Media respectively.
To impart training to students in Folk arts and Folk songs, organizing Traditional Massage Camp and creating awareness
in Folk Medicine through seminars, work shops and Camps are some of the extension work by the Department.
Within years, 22 Nets and 4 JRF have been secured by the students of the Department. Few of the students got
placement in Education Department, Archaeology Department and Press. Some others are working in different Depart-
mental projects.
