Listing Advice

Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya

Taxonomy

Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya was one of seven varieties proposed by George (1991) and is

distinguished from other varieties by its small flowers, narrow lobed petals and narrow sepals

(Brown et al., 1998).

Based on recent collections, Harris and Rye (2013) undertook a re-assessment of V. plumosa

varieties. It was found that the variety is a synonym of V. p. var. brachyphylla as there are no

reliable morphological characters that distinguish the two (Harris and Rye, 2013). Verticordia

plumosa var. brachyphylla occurs from Arrowsmith River south to Scott River and south-east to

Fitzgerald River National Park (Harris and Rye, 2013). The narrow-petalled featherflower was

removed as declared rare flora in September 2013 from the Wildlife Conservation Act 1950

(Western Australia).

Reason for conservation assessment by the Threatened Species Scientific Committee

Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya is listed as endangered. This species is eligible for listing as

endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act)

as, prior to the commencement of the EPBC Actit was listed as endangered under Schedule 1 of

the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth).

This assessment is due to current information on Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya, stating the

variety is no longer considered a valid taxon.

Public consultation

Notice of the proposed amendment and the reasons was made available for public comment for 46

business days between 24 November 2014 and 30 January 2015. No comments were received.

Assessment of available information in relation to the EPBC Act Criteria and Regulations

and Consideration for delisting

As identified in the taxonomic discussion provided above, Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya is

no longer considered to be a valid taxon and is not eligible for listing in any category.

Consideration for delisting

As Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya is not considered to be a valid variety, delisting is not

expected to have any negative impacts.

Recommendations

(i)

The Committee recommends that the list referred to in section 178 of the EPBC Act be

amended by deleting from the list in the endangered category:

Verticordia plumosa var. pleiobotrya

The Committee notes that this variety is eligible for delisting due to taxonomic change.
