Vegetation Condition
Vegetation condition within the Study Area was noted at each quadrat, based on factors
such as the presence of weeds, tracks, litter, grazing and any other ground disturbances.
Vegetation condition was also compared against the vegetation scales in Bush Forever
Volume 2 (Bush Forever, 2000). Vegetation condition within the Study Area varied along its
length. Table 5‐6 shows the vegetation condition level recorded in the freehold and pastoral
sections of the Study Area. The freehold area results do not include areas devoid of native
vegetation as these areas were not surveyed. Therefore it is an assessment of the remaining
native vegetation in that area.

Farming has affected the condition of the vegetation in the freehold section of the Study
Area. Factors affecting the vegetation include clearing, the introduction of weeds, the
proliferation of species that are resistant to grazing, and salinity. Recent low intensity,
localised fires have also adversely affected vegetation condition in some areas. Vegetation
condition in remnants along the freehold section of the Study Area was largely determined
by size. The smaller areas were more susceptible to the disturbance factors considered and
therefore tended to be more degraded.
Disturbance within the pastoral section of the Study Area was moderate. The main factor
affecting vegetation condition is grazing pressure from cattle and introduced fauna.
Cleared areas devoid of native vegetation encompass 16.6% (37,414 ha) of the entire Study
Area.
5.2.1.5
Vegetation of Conservation Significance
Vegetation communities may be protected at a National level under the EPBC Act. No
communities listed under the Environmental Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act
1999 (EPBC Act) have been recorded in the Study Area.
Vegetation communities in WA may be protected at State level by the Minister for the
Environment, through listing as a Threatened Ecological Community (TEC) or Priority
Ecological Community (PEC), or may be declared as an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA).
OPR Rail Development
Public Environmental Review
58
No TECs or ESAs have been recorded within the Study Area (DEC 2010), however four PECs
have been recorded within the Study Area, all of which are categorized as Priority 1 PECs.
These are described in Table 5‐7.
Priority 1 PECs are poorly‐known ecological communities with apparently few, small
occurrences, all or most not actively managed for conservation (e.g. within agricultural or
pastoral lands, urban areas, active mineral leases) and for which current threats exist.
Communities may be included if they are comparatively well‐known from one or more
localities but do not meet adequacy of survey requirements, and/or are not well defined,
and appear to be under immediate threat from known threatening processes across their
range (DEC 2007).

Tallering Peak
Vegetation Complexes
Tallering Peak in the northwest is a massif of banded ironstone and jaspilite, with
outcropping masses or rock along the spine. Vegetation is sparse and includes shrubs of
only 1.2 m of Acacia quadrimarginea, Acacia coolgardiensis, Eremophila leucophylla,
Thryptomene johnsonii, a small Baeckea sp. or Thryptomene sp. and Ptilotus obovatus.
Weld Range Vegetation

Banded Iron Formation.
Significant Vegetation Associations
Beard vegetation mapping was used to determine significant vegetation associations. A
vegetation association was determined to be significant if less than 30% of the communities’
pre‐European extent remained. As the freehold area has been extensively cleared and
clearing is limited in the pastoral area, only the freehold area contained vegetation
associations with less than 30% of their pre‐European extent remaining. The freehold area is
contained within the boundaries of the Geraldton Sandplains IBRA region.
