Penis: Male reproductive organ that transfers sperm to the female.

Erection: When the penis becomes engorged with blood causing it to become stiff and hard. This must happen before a male can ejaculate.

Ejaculation: The ejection of semen through the penis during sexual activity.

Epididymis: A set of coiled tubes that lie alongside and connect the testes with the vas deferens. Sperm mature and are stored here.

Prostate gland: Structure surrounding the ejaculatory ducts that produces some of the components of semen. Common place for cancer.

Scrotum: Pouch-like structure containing the testes.

Seminal vesicles: Sac-like structures attached to the vas deferens that provides sugary fluids to lubricate the duct system and nourish the sperm in semen.

Sperm: Male sex cells.

Testicle: Structure in males in which sperm are produced (plural: testes).

Testosterone: Major male sex hormone.

Urethra: Organ that carries sperm through the penis and conveys urine from the bladder.

Vas deferens: Muscular tube that passes upward alongside the testes and transports the sperm.

Cowper’s gland: Two small glands that produce a clear, sticky fluid added to semen to allow it to thicken in the female.

Nocturnal Emissions- An uncontrolled ejaculation during sleep.

Semen is made up of four parts

  1. Fluid from seminal vesicles

  2. Fluid from the prostate

  3. Fluid from the cowpers gland

  4. Sperm

Sperm facts:

  • About 200 million or more sperm are produced a day!

  • Sperm can live for 3-5 days in the uterus and fallopian tubes.

  • Sperm usually reach the fallopian tubes about an hour after ejaculation.

  • Sperm make up only about 2% of an ejaculation.

  • 400 million sperm can fit on the head of a pin!!!!
