  1. Takrarishta

Ref. Sarakasamhita, Astanga hrdayam, Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Kadhanikragam

It is not truly arishta, which is kanchika type of sour liquor.



Method – 1

Pure cow’s butter milk (one fourth butter milk is diluted with water), Sphaeranthus indicus L., Nigella sativa L., Coriandrum sativum L., Cuminum cyminum L., Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Piper longum L., Plumbago zeylanica L., Rhaphidophora laciniata R. Pertusa (Roxb.) Schott, Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Hyoscyamus niger L. are added in the form of powder and mixed well. Normally, after fermentation the sour and salty taste should be dominant.



Note

There is no quantity of butter milk and presheba suranam mentioned in the preparation. By experience, 3 litres of butter milk and 1200 gm of presheba suranam are used in the preparation. The butter milk should not be free from butter.



Method – 2

Butter milk (144 gm), Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Terminalia chebula Retz., Piper nigrum L. and five types of salt are mixed together and kept for fermentation.



Biomedical properties

This method of preparation is well used for Gragani and hemorrhoids, worm infestation, loss of appetite, irritable bowel syndrome, and diarrhea.


2. Thambulasava

Ref. Kadhanikragam

Flowers of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz. (336 gm), 480 gm of Areca catechu L., 480 gm of Acacia catechu (L.f.) Willd., 1500 leaves of Piper betle L., 4.800 kg of honey, 96 gm of Piper cubeba L.f., 96 gm of Piper longum L., 48 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, are powdered and mixed with the help of hands for three days in 4.500 litres of water. Then 14.400 kg of jaggery is dissolved in 7.500 litres of water and mixed with the previous solutuion and kept for fermentation.

The fermenting pot should be cleaned with Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels decoction and fumed with Aquilaria agallocha Roxb. and sugar.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.

Biomedical properties

The arishta is recommended for indigestion, piles and as good appetizer, health tonic.


3. Thanthiarishta -1

Ref. Charaka samhita, Astanga hrdayam and Kadhanikragam



Merremia turpethum Rendle (48 gm), Plumbago zeylanica L., Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, root of Premna obtusifolia R.Br., Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Gmelina asiatica L. , Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Tribulus terrestris L., Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn. are made into decocotion using 7.500 litres of water and cocentrated into one fourth of decoction. Then add 4.800 kg of jaggery and 768 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., and allowed for fermentation.

Note

In Astanga hrdayam, Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz. is not used in the preparation and the amount of jaggery is more than enough. The resulted arishta is in the form of semi liquid.



Thanthiarishta -2

Ref. Susruta samhita



Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Premna obtusifolia R.Br. root, Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Gmelina asiatica L., Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Tribulus terrestris L., Merremia turpethum Rendle , Plumbago zeylanica L and Terminalia chebula Retz. are totally 4800 gm and are made into decocotion and concentrated to one fourth of decoction and 4800 gm of jaggery is dissolved in the decoction and allowed for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 60 ml.



Biomedical properties

The arishta is suggested for constipation, purgatives are indicated like udavartta, gulma, ascitis, chronic fevers, anaemia and also for liver disorders.


4. Thanyakhatharishta

Ref. Kadhanikragam

Seeds of Coriandrum sativum L. (48 gm), each of 48 gm of Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Cyperus rotundus L., Azadirachta indica A. Juss, 96 gm of Prunus cerasoides D. Don, 96 gm of Inula racemosa Hook. F., 384 gm of Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f & Thomson, 384 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn. are powdered and made decoction using 15 litres of water and concentrated into three fourth of decoction. Then add 48 gm of Coscinium fenestratum Colebr. and add 768 gm of honey then allowed for fermentation.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.



Biomedical properties

This arishta is good for chronic fever, indigestion and also appetizer, taste enhancer.


5. Thribalarishta

Ref. Saraka samhita and Kadhanikragam

Each of 192 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., Terminalia bellirica (Gaertn.) Roxb., Emblica offcinalis Gaertn., Cuminum cyminum L., Plumbago zeylanica L. Piper longum L., iron dust, Embelia ribes Burm.f., are powdered and prepare decoction. The above materials are also used as Presheba suranam. In addition to this 4800 gm of jaggery and 384 gm of honey are dissolved in 7.500 litres of water and add the Praseba suranam and kept for fermentation.

Note

The iron used in the arishta is similar to Kumariasava.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml.

Biomedical properties

This arishta is used for anaemia and as blood toner.



6. Thulasiasava

Ref. Peshajakalpa shamutsayam (Saraka samhita)

Leaves of Ocimum tenuiflorum L. (10 kg), 2.5 kg of Foeniculum vulgare Mill., 2.5 kg of Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Anethum graveolens L. are powdered and made into decoction using 70 litres of water and concentrated into 17.5 litres of decoction. Then add, 2.5 litres juice of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper betel L. 10 kg of jaggery, 200 gm of dry Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper nigrum L. , Piper longum L., Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., Ocimum tenuiflorum L. are added as presheba suranam and mixed well and kept for fermentation.

Biomedical properties

This asava is used for indigestion, stomach pain and fever.


7. Useerasava

Ref. Sarngadara samhita, Bhaishajya Ratnavali, Gathanikgraham, and Sahasrayaham

Each of 48 gm of Vetiveria zizanioides (L.) Nash, Plectranthus vettiveroides (Jacob) Singh &Sharma, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., Gmelina asiatica L. , Nymphaea stellata Willd., Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl., Prunus cerasoides D. Don, Aponogeton natans Engl.& Krause, Rubia cordifolia L., Tragia plukenetii Radcl. Sm., Sida cordifolia L., Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Wall. ex Ness, Ficus, benghalensis L., Ficus racemosa L., Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Hedyotis corymbosa (L.) Lam., Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., Trichosanthes lobata Roxb., Bauhinia acuminata L., Syzygium cumini (L.) Skeels, latex of Bombax ceiba L., 960 gm of Vitis vinifera L.and 768 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa Kurz. are added in 7.650 litres of water for decoction. 4.800 kg of sugar and 2.400 kg of honey are also added after decoction preparation, and allowed for fermentation.

Note

When the sugar quantity is increased for 7.200 or 9.600 kg, the asava taste and smell also increased.

The prescribed quantity is 15-30 ml after meals.

Biomedical properties

This asava is useful for raktapitta (Haemothermia), anaemia, impurity of blood and diabetes.



8. Varunasava

Ref. Kadhanikragam



Crataeva magna (Lour) DC. (4.800 kg), 2.400 kg heart wood of Dalbergia sissoo Roxb., 2.400 kg of Inula racemosa Hook. F., 1.200 kg of Plumbago zeylanica L., each of 600 gm of Lawsonia inermis L., Aphanamixis polystachya (Wall.) Parker, Moringa oleifera Lam., dasamoolam [Aegle marmelos (L.) Correa, Premna obtusifolia R.Br. root , Albizia lebbeck (L.) Benth, Gmelina asiatica L. , Stereospermum colais (Buch.-Ham.ex Dillwyn) Mabb., Solanum virginianum L., Solanum anguivi Lam., Pseudarthria viscida Wight & Arn., Desmodium gangeticum (L.) DC., Tribulus terrestris L.], 960 gm of Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, Solanum anguivi Lam., 240 gm of Desmostachya bipinnata (L.) Stapf, 144 gm of Bombax ceiba L., Solanum americanum Mill, 336 gm of Buchanania lanzan Spreng., 144 gm of Asparagus racemosus Willd., Gmelina asiatica L., Terminalia paniculata Roth, Pistacia chinensis Bunge, Anethum graveolens L., Rhaphidophora laciniata R. Pertusa (Roxb.) Schott, 96 gm of Sida rhombifolia L., Curcuma zedoaria (Christm.) Roscoe, Sida rhombifolia L., Caesalpinia bonduc (L.) Roxb., Glinus oppositifolious (L.) A.DC., Aristolochia bracteolata Lam., Inula racemosa Hook. F., Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet, Datura metal L., Embelia ribes Burm.f., Piper longum L., Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle, Cuminum cyminum L., Piper nigrum L., Alpinia galanga L.Sw, Nelumbo nucifera Gaertn., Hemidesmus indicus R.Br., Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br., Trachyspermum ammi (L.) Sprague, Ricinus communis L., Azadirachta indica A. Juss, Inula racemosa Hook. F., Andrographis paniculata (Burm. F.) Wall. ex Ness, Rubia cordifolia L., Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Hook. f & Thomson, Jasminum sambac (L.) Ait., Coriandrum sativum L., Cassia fistula L., Sphaeranthus indicus L., Eclipta prostata (L.) L.are powdered and made into decoction using 60 litres of water and concentrated 15 litres of decoction.

Then add, 9.600 kg of jaggery, 1.536 kg of honey, Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., 48 gm of Crocus sativus L., Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb., Santalum album L., 48 gm of Strychnos potatorum L.f., Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl, Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Anacyclus pyrethrum DC., bamboo salt, Clerodendrum serratum (L.) Moon, badikaram, Valeriana wallichii DC., Piper cubeba L.f., Myristica fragrans Houtt. Fruit, Myristica fragrans Houtt. Flower, Cinnamomum tamala (Buch.-Ham) Nees & Eberm., iron dust, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl, flowers of Cinnamomum verum Presl and Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm and kept for fermentation.



Biomedical properties

This asava is medicine for enlargement of spleen, gulma, stomach pain, leprosy, vomiting, diarrhoea, and jaundice.


9. Vasakasava

Ref. Kadhanikragam



Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet (9.600 kg) is powdered and made into decoction using 30 litres of water and concentrated to 7.500 litres of decoction and add 4.800 kg of jaggery, 384 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., 48 gm bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl, Cinnamomum verum Presl flower, Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Piper cubeba L.f., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper nigrum L. , Piper longum L. and Plectranthus vettiveroides (Jacob) Singh &Sharma, and kept for fermentation.

Biomedical properties

This asava is recommended for cough, malaria, leprosy.
10. Vasarishta

Ref. Bhaishajya Ratnavali

The juice of Justicia beddomei (C.B.Clarke) Bennet and Mirutavasanjivani vinegar are mixed together in equal volume in a mudpot for one week and filtered and consumed.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 60 ml.



Biomedical properties

This arishta is excellent in persistent cough and very good in haemoptysis and raktapitta and prescribed in kapha diseases and loss of voice.


11. Vidangarishta

Ref. Sarngadhra Samhita, Bhaishajya Ratnavali and Kadhanikragam

Each of Embelia ribes Burm.f. (240 gm), Piper longum L., Alpinia galanga L.Sw, Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br. rice , Wrightia tinctoria (Roxb.) R.Br. skin, Sida cordifolia L., Mukia maderaspatana (L.) M. Roem, Emblica offcinalis Gaertn. are powdered and made into decoction using 60 litres of water and concentrated into 7.500 litres of decoction. Then add, 14.400 kg of honey, each of 960 gm of Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, bark of Cinnamomum verum Presl, flowers of Cinnamomum verum Presl, each of 48 gm of Callicarpa macrophylla Vahl., Bauhinia purpurea L., Aponogeton natans Engl.& Krause, 384 gm of Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Piper nigrum L. , Piper longum L. in the decoction and kept for fermentation.

Biomedical properties

This arishta is strongly recommended for worm disease.


12. Yogarajasava

Ref. Yogaratnagaram

Dry fruits of of Vitis vinifera L. (480 gm), 192 gm of Terminalia chebula Retz., each of 48 gm of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Ziziphus mauritiana Lam., Tectona grandis L.f., Terminalia arjuna Wight & Arn, Cedrus deodara (Roxb. ex D.Don) G.Don, Plumbago zeylanica L., Aponogeton natans Engl.& Krause, Piper longum L., Woodfordia fruticosa (L.)Kurz., Areca catechu L., 96 gm of Rubia cordifolia L. are powdered and made into decoction using 6 litres of water and concentrated into 3 litres of decoction. Then add 480 gm of jaggery, 480 gm of sugar, 48 gm of Syzygium aromaticum (L.) Merr. & L.M.Perry, Myristica fragrans Houtt., Elettaria cardamomum (L.)Maton, Mesua nagassarium (Burm. F.) Kosterm, Piper longum L., Piper nigrum L., Zingiber officinale Roscoe, Cinnamomum verum Presl, Nardostachys grandiflora DC., Piper nigrum L., Cyperus rotundus L., Inula racemosa Hook. F., Myristica fragrans Houtt., Piper longum L., Euphorbia antiquorum L. and Picrorhiza scrophulariiflora Pennell and kept for fermentation. After fermentation, 6 gm of Cinnamomum camphora (L.) Presl is added.

The prescribed amount is 15 – 30 ml

This asava is recommended as an appetizer and blood toner.
