MARCHAGEE
Location
The district lies mostly to the west of
Coorow and Watheroo with a tongue
extending south-eastwards towards
Dalwallinu.
Topography
There are very extensive sandplains,
often with linear sand ridges and
some minor lateritic outcrops,
elevated depressions and ephemeral
lakes. Valley floors and lakes are
common in the lower parts.
Soils
The dominant soils on the sandplain
are deep, yellow sands (neutral in
reaction) with limited areas of sand
over gravel and/or rock. The valley
soils are most commonly sand over
red or yellow clay or occasionally red
loams over hardpan. Salinity
commonly occurs in the lower parts
of the valleys.
Problems
Wind erosion is common when the
sandy surface soil is bared by
cultivation or overgrazing - unit 1.
Development of subsoil compaction
due to cultivation machinery - unit 1.
Waterlogging and salinity in lower
parts of valleys - unit 2.

MINGENEW
Location
This district lies in the headwaters of the
Irwin River with the town of Mingenew at
the centre of its western boundary.
Topography
This complex district occupies
dissected, gently undulating country
in the headwaters of the Irwin River
where the river has excavated
deeply into the readily erodible
Permian sediments (shales and
limestones). The district is bounded
by scarps above which the old
lateritic plateau of adjacent districts
is preserved.
Soils
The soils of the breakaways are
mainly gravel at the surface with
massive ironstone exposed and are
not normally cleared. The gently
inclined slopes have red and brown
alkaline clays, which are often
saline, and small areas of crabhole
(gilgai) country. The small hills have
shallow soils over sandstone and
alluvial plains red sandy loam over
clay and red and brown alkaline
clays. The low ridges have sand
over gravel and the elevated, broad,
open depressions have sand over
red clay. The sandplains are made
up of deep, pale yellow sand.
Problems
Water erosion, both sheet and
gullying, is serious on the sloping
country - units 1 and 3.
Soil salinity, particularly in the
northern half of the system, is
commonplace - units 1 and 3.
Wind erosion can occur on the
sandy soils if the surface is bared by
cultivation or overgrazing - unit 6.
