3.6 Bh%≠ma “slain” by —ikhaº∂in. Eventually, Bhīsma and —ikhaº∂in meet on the battlefield. Bhīsma easily wards off —ikhaº∂in’s arrows but refuses to raise his weapons against him. Arjuna, the great archer of the P#º∂ava, directs his brothers to put —ikhaº∂in before them as a kind of human shield. This allows Arjuna to approach Bhīsma and shoot him full of arrows. Bhīsma, incapacitated by the sheer number of arrows in his body, retires from battle but refuses to waits to die until the auspicious moment of the winter solstice. [Mbh 6.99-122]. Although it was not —ikhaº∂in’s arrows that killed Bhīsma, nevertheless the Ganges blames her son’s death on —ikhaº∂in [Mbh 13.154.21]
