TEAM NOTES
Preseason All-American by the Sports Network...2009
Preseason All-OVC Team selection...Earned All-Ameri-
can honors in 2008 after ranking third in the nation in
punting (44.7 yards/punt)...That was his second con-
secutive All-American honor, making him only the third
player in Redhawk history to accomplish that feat...Had
15 punts of 50 yards or longer including a long of 61
yards against nationally-ranked Missouri...Also
handled placekicking and kickoff duties...
In 2007, was named an All-American by the Sports
Network after averaging 42.5 yards per punt...Has
averaged 43.5 yards per punt (107 total punts) in his
three years at SEMO (two as the starter).
•
Senior P/K Doug Spada earned two All-American honors this preseason. A native
of Shelby, N.C., Spada was named to both the Sports Network (First-Team) and
Consensus Draft Services Preseason FCS All-American Teams. He led the OVC
and ranked third in the nation with a 44.7 yards per punt average a year ago.
Spada also became only the third player in Southeast Missouri State University
football history to garner All-American accolades in consecutive seasons, joining
P David Simonhoff (2004-06) and TE Ray Goodson (2003-04).
•
Preseason All-Ohio Valley Conference senior WR Walter Peoples is closing in
on 1,000 receiving yards in his Southeast Missouri State University career. Peoples,
who hails from Glendale, Ariz., caught 65 passes for a league-high 903 yards last
season. He has 70 catches for 972 yards and seven touchdowns (six in 2008) in
three years for the Redhawks. Peoples enters the year on a streak of 14-consecu-
tive games with a catch.
•
Nine of Southeast Missouri State’s 13 interceptions came against OVC oppo-
nents last season. The Redhawks, who tied for fourth in interceptions in league
play, finished with 228 INT return yards (17.5 ypr). Southeast’s defense also re-
covered 10 fumbles on the year.
•
Several high profile professional coaches have spent time at Southeast Missouri
State as assistant coaches. Former Tampa Bay head coach and current Monday
Night Football analyst Jon Gruden was the quarterbacks coach at Southeast in
1988. Philadelphia Eagles offensive coordinator (and former Detroit Lions head
coach) Marty Mornhinweg was also an assistant at Southeast, taking over for
Gruden as quarterbacks coach when he left following the 1988 season.

the seventh player in SEMO history to catch 60 or
more passes in a season (and first since Willie Pon-
der did so in 2003)...Caught at least five passes in
nine different games...Had eight receptions at na-
tionally-ranked Missouri and against OVC Champion
Eastern Kentucky...Made seven catches for 89 yards

Samuel has a wealth of experience, both as a player and coach,
to the profession. After a playing career under Tom Osborne at
Nebraska (1974-77), Samuel was an assistant coach at Western
Michigan (1982-83), Stanford (1984-85) and Nebraska (1998-96)
before taking over the head coach duties at New Mexico State for
eight years (1997-04). He was also an assistant coach at Purdue
for one season (2005) before becoming head coach at Southeast
Missouri.
•
Samuel has participated in 15 Bowl Games as a player or coach.
That includes the 1994 and 1995 Orange Bowls, where Nebraska
won back-to-back national championships.
•
As a player for the Cornhuskers, Samuel was a member of
Osborne’s first recruiting class and was a two-year starter at de-
fensive end. He played in four bowl games (Sugar, Fiesta, Astro
Bluebonnet and Liberty) and earned honorable mention All-Big
Eight honors as a senior in 1977.
•
Samuel has coached numerous NFL players, including first round
draft picks Trev Albert and Grant Winstrom.
•
In his tenure at NMSU, led the team to only its third winning
season in 32 years with a 6-5 mark in 1999. Also helped the Aggies
program set records for total and average attendance.
•
Samuel was born in Trinidad, West Indies but moved to Jersey
City, N.J. at age 10.
Tony Samuel enters his fourth year with the Redhawks in 2009 and
his 11th season overall as a head coach.
