Course Descriptions
The American College of Surgeons is accredited by the
Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education
(ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physi-
cians. The Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS) is
a CME program developed by the American College of Sur-
geons Committee on Trauma. The ATLS course is designed
for the physician who first at-tends to the injured patients
and has the greatest opportunity to impact outcome.
2-Day Student Course: The ATLS 2-Day Student Course
teaches medical core content in an interactive format. The
student participates in hands-on skills sessions in simulat-
ed trauma settings, triage scenarios and written and practi-
cal tests. ATLS status is valid 4 years from the course date.
The American College of Surgeons designates this live
activity for a maximum of 17 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™.
Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with
the extent of their participation in the activity. Of the AMA
PRA Category 1 Credits™ listed above, a maximum of 17
credits meet the requirements for Self-Assessment.
½-Day Student Refresher Course: The
ATLS Student Re-
fresher Course provides physicians the opportunity to main-
tain their current provider status. The 1/2-day course pro-
vides content overview, triage scenarios with written and
practical tests. Verification is valid 4 years from the course
date. Registrants must hold a current ATLS Provider card.
While ATLS provides a 6-month window in which to re-verify
by the 1/2-day Refresher Course, this window does not
extend the expiration date. The American College of Sur-
geons designates this live activity for a maximum of 5 AMA
PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should claim only the
credit commensurate with the extent of their participation
in the activity.
1 ½-Day Day Instructor Course: The ATLS Instructor Course
is open to those Student Course and Student Refresher
participants who have been identified as having instructor
potential. Within a specified time frame, the potential eligi-
ble instructor will be taught how to teach the ATLS Student
Course. The American College of Surgeons designates this
live activity for a maximum of 8.5 AMA PRA Category 1
Credits™. Physicians should claim only the credit commen-
surate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
