... So pardon them,
and pray for their forgiveness, and take counsel
from them in matters of importance. And when you are resolved on a
course of action put your trust in Allah. Surely Allah loves those who
put their trust (in Him).
(Āl ʿImrān 3: 159)
Then you know what you do? You go and be nice and all of that, but you
need to pardon them and move on—
faʿfu ʿanhum
, lovingly pardon them.
Wa-
staghfir lahum
, and make
istighfār
for them, ask Allah to forgive them. There’s
nothing between you and me, we’re good. I’m
no longer angry; I’m already
being nice to you, that’s number one. Number two, when the meeting is over and
you are going to go make
duʿā’
, you’re going to make
duʿā’
for the
maghfirah
of
Hamzah (
raḍiya Allāh ʿanhu
), you’re going to make
duʿā’
for the entrance into
jannah
of all of those
shuhadā’
; you will also make
duʿā’
for the archers who
started this mess.
You will make
duʿā’
for them. This will be your true test of
leadership. You know that you have nothing left in your heart, when you are
making
duʿā’
for your parents, when you are making
duʿā’
for your loved ones;
you
can make
duʿā’
for those who disappointed you, those who messed up:
that’s a leader.
And by the way, this
duʿā’
is not in public, you don’t walk into the meeting
and start the meeting by saying, ‘May Allah forgive you people!’ No, no, no, this
is in private. Making
duʿā’
in public is a spectacle, you’re
just embarrassing
people. This is your way of blaming them; but in private when you’re begging
Allah, in your own time, then
you made time to beg for them, the ones who
disappointed you, and said to Allah, ‘
