The role of games in learning English

CONVERSATION GAMES
Many of the following games serve as ice breakers and provide a necessary step between controlled and free conversation, a major goal in language learning.

Serial Sentences
Objective: To stimulate conversation by having students add a sentence to an imaginative serial story.
Language level: intermediate
Equipment and material: tape recorder
This is a variation on Continued Story, p. 108, adapted for an inter­mediate group.
The first player says one sentence, which is the beginning of a story. The next player, continuing from where the first player left off, adds a second sentence, the next a third sentence, and so on around the class. Each player will try to add a sentence which makes it difficult for the following player to keep the story going, not end it. When the game gets around to the first player he will add another sentence to keep the game going. And so on, until fi­nally one unfortunate player cannot think of any way to keep the serial going and has no choice but to end it.
This is a good game to record on tape and play back for the class. Not only will it allow the students to hear their own pronunciation and intonation but it will also provide an enjoyable experience. Example:
Student 1; It was a beautiful morning in June.
Student 2; '"Let's go fishing," Tom said to his friend Bill.
Student 3: "Where shall we go?" asked Bill.
Student 4: Tom suggested that they go to Silver Lake.
Student 5: They got in their car and went to Silver Lake.
Student 6: For a long time they didn't catch any fish.
Student 7: Then suddenly they both caught a lot of fish.
Student 8; "'We have enough fish, so let's go home," Bill said.
Student 9: So they started home.
Student 10: But on the way home the car suddenly broke down.
Student 11: At first they thought they were out of gas.
Student 12: So Tom went to find a gas station. (And so on.)
