There are a range of factors (both environmental and individual patient) which have been suggested or linked with GDV cases. These factors include breed, age, sex, chest confirmation, diet, stress and exercise pattern.
Factors which are considered higher risk include:
The patient breed
Giant and large breeds being most susceptible
Breeds which are deep and narrow chested.
Animals which have had a close relative which has had GDV.
Slightly older patients
Patients which are fed just once daily
have a tendency to rush their food therefore increasing the risk of aerophagia
