The initial aim in the treatment of GDV patients is the restoration of the cardiovascular system, i.e. the circulation. This will aid renal function and the respiratory system. In order to do this effectively the effects of the dilated stomach on the abdominal veins and the respiratory system need to be reduced. This is generally carried out by gastric decompression and the provision of intravenous fluids. There are no definite rules as to whether the gastric decompression or fluid therapy should be carried out first but gastric decompression should not be delayed for more than 10-15 minutes.
