Midazolam (Versed)
Class: Benzodiazepine (related to lorazepam (Ativan)); controlled substance
Mechanism of Action: suppresses the central nervous system by reversibly interacting with gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) receptors in the central nervous system which then exhibits sedative, anxiolytic, amnesic and hypnotic activities
Routes of Administration: IV, IM, IO, intranasal
Uses: sedation and active seizures

Pediatric Bradycardia

Sedation for transcutaneous pacing

0.05 mg/kg IV/IO titrated slowly; may repeat once in 5 minutes

0.1 mg/kg

Pediatric Seizures

Active seizures

0.05 mg/kg IV/IO ,

0.1 mg/kg IM; up to a maximum of individual dose 5 mg)



May repeat ONCE up to maximum individual dose

Obstetrical Emergencies

Pregnant women with continued active seizures after magnesium administration

2 – 5 mg (0.05 mg/kg) IV/IO/IM

5 mg per dose


Side Effects: respiratory depression
How Supplied: 5 mg/1 mL vials
Special Documentation: narcotic sheet must be filled out when midazolam is used and witness must sign off when waste occurs
