The essence of the communicative
approach in teaching a foreign
language
 
 
the main idea of the communicative approach is the
communicative orientation of learning. Language is
primarily a means of communication. Therefore, the study
of obsolete constructions, complex, rarely used
grammatical topics, specific vocabulary fades into the
background. If a student is constantly involved in real
communicative situations in the learning process, he can
easily apply his knowledge in practice, guided by
external and internal motives (buying plane tickets,
ordering food in a restaurant, wanting to get to know
each other).

 In teaching materials with a communicative
orientation, grammar is presented through
dialogues and texts, and the process of mastering it
is inductive: that is, students, faced with a new
construction for themselves, using the context,
independently form a rule and some kind of
speech pattern. After that, immediately by means
of a game or a question-answer exercise, the rule is
brought into speech, and only at the end is the
written practice of what has been studied. In
textbooks, rules and schemes, of course, are
presented, but most often in a compressed version
of the "sample-example". A more detailed analysis
of the rule is taken out at the end of the textbook,
where, if desired, it can be found.

There are two main methods of teaching
grammar: inductive and deductive. The
deductive method involves the presentation
of a grammatical rule, its explanation and
subsequent practice. And when using the
inductive method, the student is faced with
the task of independently formulating the
rule on the basis of the material given by
the teacher. Of course, both methods have
different advantages and disadvantages.
