denkmal 2016: The Whole Field of Historic Monument Preservation And Restoration
Preserving our cultural heritage is a very complex endeavour involving many challenges for every single building: Specific framework conditions need to be met, planning approaches prepared and the options for practical implementation selected. denkmal, the industry’s leading European trade fair, which will be taking place in Leipzig from 10 to 12 November 2016, will see the national and international stakeholders of historic monument reservation, restoration and old building refurbishing gathered in one place. denkmal offers a many-faceted exhibition, lively presentations and an extensive professional programme, making it an indispensable platform where all the industry’s leading experts exchange information and ideas.
More than 400 exhibitors from Germany and abroad are expected at denkmal, which will have its 12th edition this year. Visitors can get acquainted in depth with all aspects of historic monument preservation and restoration, from special materials to high-quality products and outstanding service offerings. Numerous market leaders and brands, specialised skilled craft businesses and restorators will be presenting themselves, as will renowned institutions – a very special mix of regular and first-time exhibitors.
The exhibitors include, among others, CAPAROL, CLAYTEC, Glashütte Lamberts, Keimfarben, Remmers Baustofftechnik, SCHOTT, PaX, Wienerberger, Zement- und Kalkwerke Otterbein, Xella, Bennert – Betrieb für Bauwerkssicherung, FUCHS + GIRKE Bau- und Denkmalpflege, KRAMP & KRAMP, ArcTron, Kremer Pigmente, DERIX GLASSTUDIOS, Nüthen, Deffner & Johann, and Noris Blattgold. And if the range of exhibitors is impressive, so is the variety of presentation styles on show. At numerous shared stands, visitors in 2016 will receive complex information about historic monument preservation and restoration in selected regions, countries or specialised fields. For instance, the federal state of Hesse has been a regular participant since 2008, while the metropolitan region of Berlin-Brandenburg will be represented for the second time.
“Live” workshops and practical demonstrations of traditional craft methods boost the industry’s diversity across all disciplines. Many skilled crafts, some of them quite rare, can be seen live in action. Every single technique on display relies on a wealth of experience and excellence. Another core theme of the trade fair will be the question of how to recruit young and skilled staff.
Multifarious and international professional programme on current topics
Think of denkmal’s professional programme as its calling card: Almost 150 talks, symposiums, panel discussions and workshops cover the complete breadth of historic monument preservation and restoration. Visitors will be able to gather valuable knowledge and engage in dialogue with other experts. The professional programme will cover the Congress Center Leipzig, the denkmal forums in the trade fair hall and the exhibitor forums at the individual stands.
A number of institutions with national and international renown use the industry’s leading European trade fair for the exchange of ideas and for networking both in their capacity as exhibitors and as contributors to the professional programme. This includes the German National Committee for the Preservation of Historical Monuments (DNK), the German Foundation for Historic Monument Preservation (DSD), the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), Europa Nostra (an important European association in the field of historic monument preservation), the German Association of Conservators (VdL), the Association of Restorators (VDR), the Federal Assocation of Restorators in Skilled Crafts, the German Stonemason Association and the Loam Umbrella Organisation.
As the industry’s leading European trade fair, denkmal provides ideal conditions to get in touch with national and international stakeholders in historic monument preservation. The international matchmaking event CONTACT denkmal, now in its fifth edition, is a worthwhile instrument to generate deals between businesses from Germany and abroad.
Once again, prestigious awards will also be given away at this year’s trade fair. This includes the denkmal Gold Medal for outstanding achievements in historic monument preservation in Europe, the Bernhard Remmers Award for outstanding craftsmanship in building preservation, the Hieronymus Lotter Award for historic monument preservation 2016, and the awards of the 9th “DenkMal Nutzung!” trade fair academy. The current professional programm of denkmal can be seen online at

Synergies with MUTEC, held in parallel.
MUTEC, the International Trade Fair for Museum and Exhibition Technology, has been taking place in parallel with denkmal since 2010. Though they cover different subjects, both trade fairs offer exciting synergies as they are both concerned with the preservation of cultural heritage. Exhibitors such as the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK) are represented with a stand at both MUTEC and denkmal. The German Confederation of Skilled Crafts (ZDH) will present the talk “Restoration with skilled crafts in the museum”, tackling a subject that should be of interest to the audiences of both trade fairs.
